Niccolò, 44
Florence, Italy
Full name: Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli. I was a Florentine government official and diplomat. I was also a writer, historian, playwright, and political theorist.
The Prince
A short written political treatise. Its main innovation was describing politics realistically. I said rulers need skill, planning, flexibility, and sometimes tough choices to gain and keep power instead of only following an ideal moral model.
People, history, and virtù
My work shows humanism by studying human choices, classicism by using Greek and Roman examples, individualism by focusing on a leader's personal virtù, and secularism by examining politics separately from Church teaching. It was not mainly about religious reform or Christian humanism.
A political strategist
A political campaign manager or foreign-policy strategist would probably like my work because they also study power, public opinion, opponents, changing events, and the results of decisions.
Walk, dinner, debate
A walk along the Arno River, a Tuscan dinner, and a debate about Roman history and whether it is better for a leader to be loved or feared.
Curious, realistic, interested in government, and enjoys debating ideas.
Thinks every political choice is simple and will not learn from history.
